Novelty Programme

We’re not as sad as Doestoevsky,
We’re not as clever as Mark Twain,
Sound & Vision in corduroys,
We’re not terrific but we’re competent.

Open Studios

After discussing with my tutor the possibilities for presenting my studio work, we ended up discussing about one artwork  being the strongest of my work. This was a video of the back of the head, being upside down and in black and white. While the video is playing, around every minute or so a flash of my face comes in, and a loud distorted noise is being heard. I have been working on this video a long time now and kept on making alterations even till the last-minute.

We discussed with my tutor different ways of displaying this video and agreed that the best way would be a small monitor, like a mini tablet. This tablet would be on the wall and its height would be on your waistline. In this way it would be more of a sculptural piece than just a video. Unfortunately the only tablet available in the university was already booked. The next best thing would be to  use my phone as a monitor. That didn’t work either because it doesn’t have the option of looping your video. I finally got to book the last day of installing two monitors from Q Digital. I booked two monitors because by that time I decided that I wanted to add a second video that I was working on.

Till the point I actually got the monitors I had already given  my two videos at the showreel shown in the main lecture theatre. I decided that the two videos would be playing just for their approximate length in the showreel. Each video was for 50seconds long and would appear in between videos made by others. Every time one of my videos would appear, you would see the word UNTITLED taking the while screen space and underneath it with smaller letters “by Rozita Gatzouli”. I found it very humorous but also once someone had seen the first video with the surprise, every time they would see “UNTITLED by Rozita Gatzouli” I was hoping to give them a small anticipation of what might follow.

In the end I believe that both videos were stronger in the open studios than in the showreel. Both videos worked very well as sculptural pieces and I was glad to see that they were even complimented by the castle.
